Market Day in Todi - Searching for the Eagle

If we look up in the mornings we see hot air balloons, if we look down in the mornings we see local wildlife.

Although the hedgehog is found throughout this area it is the eagle which has captured our imagination as it is the symbol of Todi.
Legend has it that the construction of Todi began on the banks of the River Tiber. One day an eagle descended from the skies and snatched a tablecloth from a local family as they were sharing a meal. The eagle dropped the tablecloth higher up the mountain slopes, and since this was considered to be a good omen, building work was moved to the higher site. So the eagle with cloth in its talons remains the symbol of Todi today. This bronze sculpture is in the main piazza and dates back to  1339.

Since we came across this story just after arriving in Todi we have enjoyed hunting out the eagle each time we have been in town. And each time we have found a new one.

Eagle spotting.

What's that over your shoulder, Madeleine?
Is that an eagle or a goose?

Eagle hunting.
Is this the biggest eagle ever.....?
......there he goes......
......he's flying straight at us.....
......the eagle has landed.....or is that Daniel?!!

  1. Did you keep count of how many eagles you found in Todi? They vary a lot in colour and size but they all look interesting....especially the one that does look like a goose.. We think that you made an excellent job of being an eagle, Daniel. Lots of love, Nanna and Pop
