Saturday in Frankfurt

After breakfast at the Sonne hotel we walked to Torsten, Benedetta and Alice's house to start our first full day in Germany. We then drove in 2 cars to central Frankfurt. Daniel wanted to try a Frankfurt sausage, Madeleine was happy being with Alice and Dad was keen to do some shopping for things he is unable to get at home in Australia. It is now somewhat of a tradition that Dad looks for Pott knives  when he visits Germany and Torsten and Benedetta know where to take him to find them.

In no time at all we found ourselves in central Frankfurt witnessing a rather curious display of what you can do with a bicycle. From what we could see there was a competition between teams to see how quickly they could load 50 boxes onto a modified bicycle and then travel around an obstacle course.
Nearby there was a bike on a 360 degree "loop-the-loop" track and a number of stalls with fun activities. We really enjoyed shooting the toy crossbow at a target... although the best bit was the chocolates they gave us for shooting straight.

How to race around a track with 50 boxes on a bike!

Riding a bicycle upside down.

Madeleine, Daniel and Alice all received a box of chocolates for hitting the target!

Now how do you open this chocolate wrapper?

Before long it was time to find the local food market for an authentic German sausage, an ice cream and an amazing new culinary experience for us..... deep fried elderflower!
Lunch is ready.

A mobile BBQ

Can you really eat Elderflower?
More yummy icecream.
Just hanging out with Alice.
Cotton candy!

Love this red Vespa....

...and this big American car.

After a great walk through the streets of Frankfurt (where everybody found the things they were looking for) we returned to Bad Homburg to play in the garden and enjoy a delicious home-cooked Italian meal.

  1. You were so lucky to have such special friends to show you around their home city. We were most impressed to see that you all won boxes of chocolates for your skill with the cross-bows. We hope that you enjoyed eating the deep fried elder flowers. You used to have an elder flower bush in your garden, not far from the BBQ. Maybe you could try making that treat when you get home. We used to have a very big elder flower bush at the Barn. As the flowers are edible, we often used them to decorate the cake plates. Some people we know also made wine from the elder berries. Was the German ice cream as good as the French chocolate sorbet?
Lots of love from cold and wet Mortlake, Nanna and Pop xxxx
